Early Life and Education
Born as the third of seven children in Ibadan, Oyo State’s capital, Ibukun Awosika attended St. Paul’s African Church Primary School in Lagos for her primary education and continued to Methodist Girls’ High School in Yaba for secondary education.
She graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from the University of Ife, now Obafemi Awolowo University. Initially aspiring to be an architect, she also took mathematics courses. Furthering her education, she completed postgraduate and MBA programs at the Lagos Business School and the IESE Business School at the University of Navarra.
Career
Ibukun Awosika began her career as an accounting trainee at Akintola Williams & Co. (later Deloitte) during her mandatory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) year in Kano State. She later joined Alibert Nigeria Ltd. as a showroom manager.
In 1989, seeking independence, she founded her own furniture company, Quebees Limited, which eventually evolved into The Chair Centre Limited and merged with SOKOA S.A. and Guaranty Trust Bank in 2004, becoming SOKOA Chair Centre Limited.
She is a fellow of the Africa Leadership Initiative and the Aspen Global Leadership Network, a member of the Nigerian Economic Summit Group, and serves on the board of the Nigerian Economic Forum.
She has also held the presidency of the Women in Management, Business, and Public Service and co-founded the After-School Graduate Development Centre in 2011 to combat unemployment in Nigeria.
On September 7, 2015, Ibukun Awosika became the first female Chairman of the First Bank of Nigeria. Additionally, she serves on the boards of Digital Jewel Limited and Cadbury Nigeria Plc and is a member of the International Advisory Board at IESE.
