Early Life and Education
Rachel Reeves Biography – Rachel Jane Reeves was born on 13 February 1979 in the London Borough of Lewisham, the daughter of teachers Graham and Sally Reeves. She was educated at Cator Park School for Girls in Beckenham, where she won a British Under-14 girls chess championship. She studied philosophy, politics, and economics at the University of Oxford, achieving a 2:1 Bachelor of Arts degree in 2000. Furthermore, she then obtained a Master of Science degree in economics from the London School of Economics.
Early Career
Reeves began her career at the Bank of England before moving to Leeds in 2006 to work for HBOS. Despite being offered a job at Goldman Sachs, she declined, noting the potential wealth but choosing a different path.
Political Career
Reeves joined the Labour Party at sixteen. After two unsuccessful attempts to enter the House of Commons, she was elected MP for Leeds West in 2010. From 2011 to 2024, she held various roles in the shadow cabinets of Ed Miliband and Keir Starmer, including Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer from 2021 to 2024. She chaired the Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy Committee from 2017 to 2020.
Reeves’ platform focused on modern supply side economics, aiming to boost economic growth, increase labor supply and productivity, and reduce inequality and environmental damage.
Recent Achievements
Reeves made history by becoming the first female Chancellor of the Exchequer following her party’s victory in the 2024 General Election.
Personal Life
Reeves is married to Nicholas Joicey, a civil servant and former private secretary and speechwriter for Gordon Brown. They have homes in Leeds and London and are parents to a daughter and a son. Reeves, a practising Christian, has noted her father’s influence on her political beliefs.
